The Helmholtz Centre Potsdam - GFZ German Research Centre for Geosciences is the national centre for research into the geosphere. With around 1,650 employees, we develop a sound understanding of systems and processes of the solid Earth as well as strategies and options for action to counter global change, understand natural hazards and sustainably secure energy and raw material requirements.

For section 4.5 Subsurface Process Modelling (Department 4 “Geosystems”), we are looking for a:

Software Engineer (f_m_x)

Reference Number 9506

In Section 4.5 we investigate coupled processes in the subsurface. We follow a multistage workflow, where we integrate geological and geophysical data into consistent 3D static geological models which we use to carry out  process simulations to understand the geodynamic development and derive predictions for the best use of the subsurface. Based on the developed data-based models we are interested, among other things, to describe the development of pressure and temperature conditions through time, at present-day conditions as well as with respect to future scenarios. For these Digital Twins we develop in-house open-source numerical tools for both 3D data integration and for the simulation of coupled thermal-hydraulic-mechanical processes. With this advertisement we are looking for support in these two areas of research.

Your responsibilities:

  • Development and documentation of software libraries and program systems
  • Assistance in the maintenance and development of object-oriented, HPC scalable software solutions for geological-mathematical process modelling
  • Development of visualisation concepts and software assisted solutions (e.g. GUI) tailored to the enhanced visualization of complex geological objects, structures and processes
  • Development of modelling algorithms for the description of geological processes e.g. in the area of sediment basin formation
  • Development of object-oriented and library-capable software for geological-mathematical process modelling and simulation
  • Development of interactive modelling systems for various process models
  • Development of visualisation methods for complex geological objects, structures and processes
  • System administration (local machines and computing server)

Your qualifications:

  • A master's or diploma degree in computer science or natural sciences
  • Extensive knowledge of  high-level general-purpose programming language (e.g. C++) as well as interpreted programming language (e.g. Python)
  • Experience in administration of Unix- and Windows-based operating systems
  • Experience in dealing with software and hardware problems
  • Experience in Graphical User Interface (GUI) development
  • Advanced knowledge of mathematics and physics
  • Experience in the maintenance of computing servers and PCs
  • Very good English language skills

What we offer:

  • Ambitious and varied tasks in a dynamic and international research environment
  • State-of-the-art equipment
  • Public service benefits
  • Extensive training opportunities
  • Professional career advice offered by our in-house Career-Centre
  • Flexible working hours and conditions
  • Support with finding a good work-life balance offered by benefit@work
  • Institute day-care centre on site
  • Working at the Albert Einstein science park on the Telegrafenberg in Potsdam
  • Work place within walking distance of Potsdam main train station, or just a short ride on the shuttle bus
