The Helmholtz Centre Potsdam - GFZ German Research Centre for Geosciences is the national centre for research into the geosphere. With around 1,650 employees, we develop a sound understanding of systems and processes of the solid Earth as well as strategies and options for action to counter global change, understand natural hazards and sustainably secure energy and raw material requirements.

For section 5.2 eScience-Zentrum (Department 5 “Geoinformation”), we are looking for a:

Research Software Engineer / Full Stack Developer (f_m_x) - HIFIS

The core competence of the GFZ eScience Centre is software engineering and related topics - from the piloting of software solutions and services to support during implementation, use and commissioning. The section also participates in projects to promote software engineering in science. This includes the Helmholtz Federated IT Services (HIFIS). Here, the eScience Centre in the Software Services, with its coordinating role in the Community Services, focuses on the targeted promotion of scientific communities in which research software is developed. To this end, the Research Software Directory (RSD), which is operated as the Helmholtz RSD, is being further developed in cooperation with international partners.

Your responsibilities:

  • Work in distributed, collaborative teams
  • Design and (further) develop primarily dynamic web applications and IT system interfaces, including but not limited to
    • Record and analyse existing IT systems and user requirements
    • Design data flows and interfaces
    • Implement and integrate web services
    • Design and implement web interfaces
  • Design and participate in agile software development processes
  • Work closely with user groups

Your qualifications:

  • 3+ years of experience in full-stack software development and in participating in software development projects, preferably in distributed teams
  • Knowledge and experience of agile processes, business analysis, requirements management and process development
  • Communication skills and ability to communicate complex knowledge
  • Experience in coordinating with different work units and stakeholders
  • Motivation, initiative and creativity
  • Ability to cooperate and work in a team
  • Independent, solution-oriented working style
  • Advanced knowledge of written and spoken English and German

You have experience:

  • With web technologies, preferably React, Next.js, CSS, TailwindCSS or other current frontend or backend frameworks
  • With mocking web applications, e.g. in Figma, Miro or Penpot
  • In TypeScript, Java, Python, Go or other programming languages
  • Using relational databases like PostgreSQL and NoSQL databases
  • With versioning and build tools such as Git, npm
  • Using GitLab CI/CD and GitHub Actions
  • With automation tools and container technologies such as Docker
  • Specifying interfaces, software applications and architectures
  • With data formats, data exchange protocols, metadata and standards

Fixed-term: 2 years
Salary: The salary group is determined on the basis of the Collective Wage Agreement "TVöD Bund (Tarifgebiet Ost)" with the fulfilment of the respective personal qualifications in salary group 13.
Working hours: Full-time (currently 39 h/week); The position is generally suitable for part-time work.
