Research Scientist (f_m_x) - Leader of the paleomagnetic laboratory

The GFZ laboratory for Earth’s magnetism in space and time is optimized for paleomagnetic measurements on sediments, but also well-equipped for other paleo-, archeo- and mineral magnetic measurements. We are looking for a new leader of the laboratory, who will carry out independent research and maintain the laboratory. The position offers the opportunity for a wide range of collaborations across GFZ, with other Helmholtz institutes and internationally and across a wide range of disciplines, from geomagnetism and solid Earth sciences to landscape dynamics and climate science.
Your responsibilities:
- Maintenance of the laboratory instruments and related software, assisted by a technician
- Own scientific research (incl. grant procurement) related to the GFZ strategy, e.g., in the fields of paleo-, archeo- or mineral magnetism or magnetostratigraphy
- Collaboration with other GFZ groups such as geomagnetic field evolution or paleoclimate, as well as national and international cooperations
- Briefing and supervision of guest scientists in the laboratory
- National and international networking regarding the laboratory within the national and international scientific community
Your qualifications:
- Master’s degree and PhD in geophysics, geology or geosciences
- Experience in paleomagnetic laboratory work and maintenance
- Technical experience in handling paleomagnetic laboratory instruments
- Programming experience in C and/or Python
- Good English language skills
- Commitment to national and international cooperations

Fixed-term: 3 years with tenure option
Salary: The position is classed as salary group 14 according to “TVöD Bund (Tarifgebiet Ost)”. The salary group is determined on the basis of the Collective Wage Agreement and the respective personal qualifications.
Working hours: Full-time (currently 39 h/week); The position is generally suitable for part-time work.
