The Helmholtz Centre Potsdam - GFZ German Research Centre for Geosciences is the national centre for research into the geosphere. With around 1,650 employees, we develop a sound understanding of systems and processes of the solid Earth as well as strategies and options for action to counter global change, understand natural hazards and sustainably secure energy and raw material requirements.

For section 1.4 "Remote Sensing and Geoinformatics" (department “Geodesy”), we are looking for a:

Data and GIS Scientist (f_m_x) for innovative remote sensing and geodesy developments

The working group FERN.Lab specializes in the development of application-oriented remote sensing methods and products to address pressing environmental questions. We act as an interface between scientific research and our cooperation partners and customers.

The Geodesy Department specializes in processing multi-scale, multi-resolution optical, thermal, and radar data, parameter derivation from imaging spectroscopy, time-variable evaluations of earth gravity measurements, GNSS for high-precision positioning, monitoring greenhouse gas emissions, and big data analyses. Leveraging this globally recognized expertise, FERN.Lab aims to create innovative remote sensing products and services to benefit companies, authorities, and non-governmental organizations in areas such as environmental monitoring, smart farming, raw material exploration, groundwater monitoring, and infrastructure monitoring.

Your responsibilities:

The Data and GIS scientist will play a crucial role in developing and maintaining a GIS system for the creation and dissemination of remote sensing data products. This position involves creating a user-friendly front-end interface, implementing back-end processing of geographic data, and conducting advanced analyses using cutting-edge technology. Additionally, the specialist will be responsible for geospatial data analysis, log analytics, and the development of open data and software projects.

Your qualifications:

  • Masters degree in the field of computer science or geoinformatics (or similar) 
  • Proven experience in GIS, data management, analysis, and visualisation
  • Proficiency in PostGIS, Google Earth Engine is considered a plus
  • Strong coding skills in relevant programming languages (e.g., Python, SQL, JavaScript)
  • Experience in developing user-friendly interfaces and back-end systems
  • Familiarity with Remote Sensing data (raster, vector and LiDAR) as well as campaign data analysis
  • Experience with the Elastic Stack, React, and Typescript
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively with diverse stakeholders
  • Good knowledge of German and English (technical English), spoken and written

Fixed-term: 31.12.2024
Salary: The position is classed as salary group 13 according to “TVöD Bund (Tarifgebiet Ost)”. The salary group is determined on the basis of the Collective Wage Agreement and the respective personal qualifications.
Working hours: Full-time (currently 39 h/week); The position is generally suitable for part-time work.
Place of work: Potsdam
