Research Software Engineer / Full Stack Developer (f_m_x) - DEGREE

The core competence of the GFZ eScience Centre is software engineering and related topics - from the piloting of software solutions and services to the support during implementation, use and commissioning. In a research project, a virtual digital laboratory is to be developed to improve the understanding of underground conditions and assess the potential for utilising geothermal energy. During implementation, the aim is to integrate various systems technologically and establish the automation of processes to enable the synthesis of observation data from distributed data sources, the combination of different model modules, the merging of simulation and observation data as well as their visualisation and interaction by users.
Your responsibilities:
- Design and develop a web application for the merging, visualisation and analysis of 3D geological subsurface data, including but not limited to:
- Record and analyse existing IT systems and user requirements
- Design data flows, interfaces and software architectures
- Implement web services and integrate data and software solutions from scientific working groups
- Work in a distributed team with participation from scientific institutions, public authorities and industrial partners
Your qualifications:
- Master`s degree (or equivalent) and 3+ years of experience in full-stack software development and in participating in software development projects, preferably in distributed teams
- Knowledge and experience of agile processes, business analysis, requirements management and process development
- Communication skills and ability to communicate complex knowledge
- Experience in coordinating with different work units and stakeholders
- Motivation, initiative and creativity
- Ability to cooperate and work in a team
- Independent, solution-oriented working style
- Advanced knowledge of written and spoken English and German
You have experience:
- With interactive, three-dimensional visualisation frameworks based on WebGL
- Web technologies such as React, Vue.js, CSS, SASS or other current frontend or backend frameworks
- With technologies for geo-referenced data storage, including PostgreSQL/PostGIS
- Processing and providing geodata, e.g. with GeoServer, Geonode and GIS
- With data formats, data exchange protocols and standards, e.g. OGC standards, GeoJSON, 3D tiles and REST
- In TypeScript, Java, Python or other programming languages
- With versioning and build tools such as Git, npm
- Using GitLab CI/CD, automation tools and container technologies such as Docker

Fixed-term: 2 years
Salary: The position is classed as salary group 13 according to “TVöD Bund (Tarifgebiet Ost)”. The salary group is determined on the basis of the Collective Wage Agreement and the respective personal qualifications.
Working hours: Full-time (currently 39 h/week); The position is generally suitable for part-time work.
