The Helmholtz Centre Potsdam - GFZ German Research Centre for Geosciences is the national centre for research into the geosphere. With around 1,650 employees, we develop a sound understanding of systems and processes of the solid Earth as well as strategies and options for action to counter global change, understand natural hazards and sustainably secure energy and raw material requirements.

For section 1.4 Remote Sensing and Geoinformatics (department “Geodesy”), we are looking for a:

Postdoctoral researcher (f_m_x) Hyperspectral Remote Sensing – EnMAP

In the field of sensor validation as part of the operational independent product validation activities of the EnMAP mission.

The Environmental Mapping and Analysis Program (EnMAP, www.enmap.org) is the German hyperspectral satellite mission funded by the German Federal Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate Action. EnMAP was successfully launched into space in April 2022 and started routine operations in November 2022. The main scientific goal of EnMAP is to provide high-quality data for the analysis of environmental changes, ecosystem responses to human activities, and the management of natural resources. The GFZ Potsdam has the scientific lead of the mission and is responsible for the external data quality assessment and definition of foreground/background mission, application development in the fields of geology and soil sciences, training and community building activities, and coordination of the scientific collaboration in the EnMAP PI project, with mission partners and within the hyperspectral community.

Your responsibilities:

  • Conducting the regular independent validation of L1B, L1C and L2A EnMAP products
  • Further develop the in-house validation software (EnVal) to meet new requirements
  • Contribution to the Mission Quarterly Reports as well as interim and final reports
  • Further contribute to EnMAP acquisition and proposal strategy, and cross-mission coordination and cooperation
  • Present and publish results at conferences and in international journals

Your qualifications:

  • MSc or PhD in Geosciences, Physics, Electronics or related disciplines with a strong background in remote sensing and imaging spectroscopy
  • Thorough knowledge in sensor validation. Knowledge in atmospheric radiative transfer modelling would be a plus
  • Excellent quantitative analytical and coding skills in Python
  • Ability to publish shown by a track record of publications
  • Fluency in spoken and written English is a prerequisite, basics of the German language would be helpful

Start date: As soon as possible
Fixed-term: 2 years
Salary: The position is classed as salary group 13 according to “TVöD Bund (Tarifgebiet Ost)”. The salary group is determined on the basis of the Collective Wage Agreement and the respective personal qualifications.
Working hours: Full-time (currently 39 h/week); The position is generally suitable for part-time work.
