GNSS for Climate Monitoring

GRUAN (GCOS Reference Upper Air Network) of the WMO (World Meteorological Organization) 15th Implementation and Coordination Meeting (ICM-15) took place in Bern, Switzerland, 11-15 Mar 2024.

GRUAN (GCOS Reference Upper Air Network, www.gruan.org) of the WMO (World Meteorological Organization) 15th Implementation and Coordination Meeting (ICM-15) took place in Bern, Switzerland, from 11 March to 15 March 2024. The meeting was hosted by the colleagues from MeteoSwiss-Payerne. One of main topics was GRUAN implementation plan 2024 – 2030. More than 80 participants from about 20 countries took part in the meeting onsite an online.

GFZ contributes to GRUAN with its expertise in processing of ground-based GNSS network data to generate precise Precipitable Water Vapor (PWV) data products. GNSS receivers are an integrated part of the observation equipment of the currently more than 30 globally distributed GRUAN observatories to investigate climatological variations of the Earth’s atmosphere. GFZ hosts a central processing facility for the GNSS data and is responsible for the installation of GNSS hardware, data transfer, processing and archiving, as well as derivation of GNSS-PWV products according to GRUAN requirements.

Galina Dick, group leader of the working group “GNSS Meteorology” at GFZ, took part in the meeting as a head of the Central GRUAN GNSS Data Processing Centre and reported on the status of GNSS-PWV Data Products.
