GFZ German research centre for geo sciences

Dr. Ben Norden

Group Leader
Dr. Ben Norden
Building A 69, Room 104 (Büro)
Telegrafenberg
14473 Potsdam

Function and Responsibilities:

Group Leader "Exploration Geology"

Radiation Protection Officer

Lecturer at the Technical University of Hamburg-Harburg and at the University of Potsdam

Research Interests:

My research topics focus on the thermal and hydraulic characterization of the subsurface based on rock, core and geophysical data. The methods used for interpretation include structural geological and parametric modeling as well as thermal and hydraulic modeling on different scales to investigate the thermal and hydraulic field. The research is embedded in projects on applied geothermal energy utilization and geological storage. The exploration and coherent characterization of relevant subsurface properties is a prerequisite for the management of various possibly competing applications for the use of the subsurface.

Past and ongoing research projects include:

  • Geological modelling and reservoir evaluation based on integrated interpretation across scales
  • Laboratory measurement of rock thermal and hydraulic properties (sedimentary rocks, upper and lower crustal rocks)
  • Heat-flow and temperatures in Central and Northern Europe and in Africa
  • Local to regional-scale numerical modelling of the thermal and hydraulic field
