Study on the sustainable mitigation of CO2 emissions using the geological storage of heat or gases.
The Helmholtz Climate Initiative (HI-CAM) contributes via 13 research projects in two overarching research areas relating to the climate emergency: emission avoidance and the societal adaptation options to climate change. With the conversion of the energy system from fossil fuels to renewable energies, energy storage is becoming increasingly important. In section 4.8 we concentrate on the focal point "Net Zero 2050" (CO2 mitigation) and evaluate the contribution that the geological storage of heat or gases can make to the sustainable avoidance of CO2 emissions.
Among other topics, we provide estimates of the potential and integration of underground storage solutions, including the CO2 mitigation potential of the consistent use of:
- geological heat storage in urban areas
- geological storage of CO2
