We operate the Adolf-Schmidt-Observatory for Geomagnetism in Niemegk with its workshops as well as calibration and training facilities. The more than 85 years long time series of the observatory is one of the most important benchmark datasets in geomagnetism. We also operate or support a number of geomagnetic observatories worldwide. Our main data repository is the INTERMAGNET programme. We derive the Kp index of geomagnetic activity, which is one of the most important global space weather and space climate indicators.
Projects
We participate in EU and ESA projects and in the DFG SPP 1788 'DynamicEarth' and we initiate or participate in externally or internally funded projects:
- SWAMI - Space Weather Atmosphere Model and Indices
- Main field influence on equatorial ionosphere (in SPP 1788)
- Mesospheric Optical Magnetometry (MOM)
- Coastal Magnetic Observatories and Electric Field (COMA+EF)
- Magnetic Field Measurements at Bardarbunga Dike Graben
- (MAMBO) Mars Magnetic Field (MARSMAG)
- ESC Geomagnetic Conditions - definition and development activities
