The seismic hazard in Germany does not apparently justify a „standard“ earthquake early warning. This is mainly due to the fact that the expected lead times are too short to allow for large scale mitigation actions. Hereon, the project ROBUST intends to explore the feasibility of an innovative automatic concept of on-site early warning and rapid response which could prove useful for low-medium seismicity, highly urbanized countries such as Germany (as well as other countries in Central Europe). The corresponding task will focus on selected large-scale industrial and business-critical (infra)-structures, that may have the technical capacity of exploiting very short lead times in order to carry out automatic emergency measures in the seconds preceding (and immediately following) the incoming strong ground motion.
