Electromagnetic research represents a broad field within Geophysics. In principle, the associated methods are used to determine the electrical conductivity of geo-materials as a physical parameter of the subsurface. The depth scale extends from the top soil layers (<1m) to the deep Earth's mantle (> 100km). According to the scientific target, a diverse set of methodological approaches can be applied on land, in water and the air.
At the GeoForschungsZentrum Potsdam we concentrate on land-based investigations. Focus of our research are large-scale tectonic structures, such as plate boundaries, and related processes. But we also investigate applied problems, including geoenergy research or monitoring of geological storage systems.
Electromagnetic research at the GeoForschungsZentrum Potsdam is an integral part of a broader geoscience research. In cooperation with other national and international groups, we operate worldwide - wherever key natural laboratories exist. While our research is focussed on electrical conductivity, it is often used in concert with other geophysical methods, which determine parameters such as elastic properties or density of rocks.
Thereby can we provide important information or interfaces to other fields of geosciences, including geology, petrology and geochemistry. Interdisciplinary research requires strong disciplines, however, because it can only be as strong as the underlying disciplines. Therefore, we persue a holistic approach. We develop in our own labs instrumentation and methods, apply these methods worldwide and write and code huge software packages for data analysis and interpretation. To reach our research goals we are organized in two working groups: Geo-Electromagnetics and Magnetotellurics. Please visit our project pages for further information.
Infrasctructure & Services
We also provide services for the German Research community.
- We operate, maintain and develop the magnetotelluric component of the "Geophysical Instrument Pool Potsdam" (GIPP-MT)
- We run a permanent MT remote reference site near Wittstock.
- The GFZ library hosts the proceedings of the Schmucker-Weidelt-Colloquium
- We provide a directory of the EMTF working group of the German Geophysical Society (DGG).
