The Helmholtz Centre Potsdam - GFZ German Research Centre for Geosciences is the national centre for research into the geosphere. With around 1,650 employees, we develop a sound understanding of systems and processes of the solid Earth as well as strategies and options for action to counter global change, understand natural hazards and sustainably secure energy and raw material requirements.
Research Scientist (f_m_x) - Geomagnetism
Reference Number 9880
As a part of the Helmholtz-funded InnoPool project ‘SOLVe’, the GFZ team will work on global reconstructions of the geomagnetic field, including model uncertainty estimates, covering the period of the extreme solar particle events (i.e., Miyake events). Based on these new and existing models, cutoff rigidity and cosmogenic isotope production rates will be provided for sensitivity studies and test the proxy records of these extreme events. The work will be done in collaboration with the other Helmholtz institutes according to the work plan in this project.
Your responsibilities:
- Develop new paleomagnetic field models and model uncertainties on long timescales, which are of interest for studying the past extreme solar storms
- Based on the models, estimate the geomagnetic field shielding
- Calculate 3D production rates of cosmogenic isotopes
- Convey the results to cooperating teams working within this InnoPool Project
- Publishing results
Your qualifications:
- Master’s degree and PhD in geophysics, mathematics or physics
- Experience in geomagnetic and paleomagnetic field modelling; experience with correlation based modelling is an advantage
- Programming experience in Python and C/C++
- Good English language skills
- Capacity for interdisciplinary teamwork and excellent communication skills
What we offer:
- Ambitious and varied tasks in a dynamic and international research environment
- State-of-the-art equipment
- Public service benefits
- Extensive training opportunities
- Professional career advice offered by our in-house Career-Centre
- Flexible working hours and conditions
