Friedhelm von Blanckenburg, head of the Geochemistry of the Earth's Surface Section, has been president of the German Mineralogical Society DMG since the beginning of this year. The DMG also represents geochemistry as well as materials science and raw materials science in Germany.
At the same time, Friedhelm von Blanckenburg took office on January 1, 2021, as a board member of the umbrella organization of geosciences DVGeo, where he has been one of the three vice presidents since January 1, 2021. DVGeo is the association of the four major geoscientific societies in Germany: geology, mineralogy, geophysics and paleontology. Its aim is to make the work of the four societies jointly visible and to highlight the importance of geoscientific expertise in current issues. The umbrella organization was founded in Berlin on September 3, 2015.
"The fact that geosciences have a key role to play in the major human issues of the future, like tackling the climate crisis and supplying growing humanity with geo-resources, is not sufficiently recognized," says von Blanckenburg. "The two new tasks offer the opportunity to work on these deficits. In the DMG scientifically on material cycles in the Earth system as well as geomaterials, in the umbrella organization in the integration of this expertise into the other geodisciplines as well as in external presentation."
