Under the motto "This is how the future works!", Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier and the Deutsche Bundesstiftung Umwelt (DBU) invite to the digital „Woche der Umwelt“ (Week of the Environment) on 10 and 11 June 2021. It will open today, Thursday, 10 June, at 11 a.m. with Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, and John Kerry, US Special Representative for Climate Issues, among others.
In addition to podiums and panel discussions, exhibitors from business and technology, research and science, and civil society will present innovative solutions for the future. Not - as traditionally - in the park of Bellevue Palace, but online.
The GFZ will present research projects as well as activities in the field of citizen science, technology and knowledge transfer from remote sensing with applications in environmental protection and nature conservation.
The exhibition text says: "We demand a lot from the habitats and resources of our earth, sustainable use and care is urgently needed for the protection of nature. Local point measurements are no longer sufficient to record changes in our natural and usable spaces. Current and historical satellite, aerial and drone data provide high-resolution images that can be used to observe and analyse the Earth over large areas."
The GFZ's Geodesy Department is dedicated to developing innovative methods for analysing the ever larger and faster amount of image data available.
Current questions we want to answer are:
- How can targeted environmental monitoring support the conservation of biodiversity?
- How can area-wide observation of the earth contribute to the detection of environmental pollution?
- How can we apply our new technological developments in business and administration?
- And how can we share our knowledge with society and at the same time actively involve citizens in our research?

New poster exhibition in the foyer of House G
We present exciting insights into these transfer projects from remote sensing with applications in environmental and nature conservation also at the Telegrafenberg in the foyer of House G. The posters were created as part of the Week of the Environment.
Feel free to drop by - of course still with mask and keeping distance!
The posters are also available for download / home viewing here (German only):
