Marco Bohnhoff, head of the GFZ-section Geomechanics and Rheology, is elected as a member of the Leibniz society of sciences Berlin e.V. for his scientific achievements. The certification will be handed to him by Gerhard Bande on Leibniz-Day 2018, on 5 July.

The Leibniz society of sciences is an association of scientist of the natural, social, and engineering sciences, and the arts and humanities. It is funded mainly by member fees and donations and has the goal to promote research and knowledge transfer. According to the Society’s statutes, only people who have “outstanding scholarly achievements” in their field can be elected to become members.

In its current form, the Society emerged from the scholarly society of the Academy of Sciences of the GDR after the unification of Germany. Its history goes to the Kurfürstlich Brandenburgische Societät der Wissenschaften, founded in 1700, and to its first president, Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz (1646 - 1716). (jh)
