Susanne Buiter, Scientific Director of GFZ German Research Centre for Geosciences, was recently elected to the Academia Europaea (AE). The AE is a European, non-governmental association whose objective is to encourage the advancement of “excellent scientific achievements”. Founded in 1988, the Academy consists of more than 5500 members including leading experts in humanities, economics and natural sciences.
Susanne Buiter studied geophysics in Utrecht and received her PhD with a thesis on numerical modelling of surface deformation resulting from tectonic processes. Stages in her career have taken her to Switzerland, Canada, and Norway. She led various teams at the Geological Survey of Norway NGU and was affiliated with the University of Oslo. Since 2020, she is a professor for Tectonics and Geodynamics at the RWTH Aachen University.
