The GFZ welcomes Dr. Sarwar Nizam, who joined the GFZ German Research Centre for Geosciences in March as a fellow of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation. Dr. Nizam is an environental geochemist with a broad range of interests including isotope geochemistry, biogeochemistry and climatology. His research focuses on the effects of natural and man-made processes on greenhouse gases and on the chemistry of soil, water and aerosols. He has received several awards for his innovative work, including the Inspire Faculty Scholarship from India in 2023 and a gold medal for the best PhD project from IIT Kanpur in 2022.
During his stay at GFZ, Dr. Nizam will work in the research group of Prof. Dirk Sachse (4.6 Geomorphology). His expertise in carbon isotope geochemistry, thermodynamic and kinetic modeling as well as in the measurement of greenhouse gases and trace metals will contribute to the research at GFZ. This cooperation promises to provide valuable insights for geochemistry and environmental sciences, especially with regard to global climate change. Dr. Nizam's commitment to the GFZ underlines the importance of international scientific cooperation in solving environmental and climate-related challenges.
The Humboldt Research Fellowship of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation enables excellent researchers from all over the world to carry out their projects in Germany.
