Magdalena Scheck-Wenderoth, Director of GFZ Department Geosystems, is member of the National Monitoring Committee since mid-March. She was appointed to the committee by the German Bundestag following a joint election proposal by the Bundestag and Bundesrat. Its task is to accompany the site selection procedure for a repository for high-level radioactive waste. All committee members have the opportunity to question the responsible institutions and to comment on the procedure. The monitoring committee can also make recommendations to the Bundestag on the site selection procedure.
Of the 18 members of the committee, 12 are public figures, and 6 citizens nominated in a public participation procedure. Magdalena Scheck-Wenderoth will now supplement this diverse team for three years, after which the members will be newly elected. (jz)
