Ebuka Nwosu, PhD student in the working group Microbial Communities of the Terrestrial Subsurface MicroCene of the GFZ section Geomicrobiology, received the award for the best poster presentation at this year's annual conference of the Association for General and Applied Microbiology VAAM in Mainz, Germany.

The poster is titled 'Deducing human impact on the environments via sedimentary DANN information from lake Tiefer See NE Germany'.

Since January 2019, Nwosu has been working at GFZ on his doctoral thesis on the analysis of DNA of cyanobacteria in sediments of the lake 'Tiefer See' in north-eastern Germany. He is investigating whether the genetic material deposited over thousands of years can be used as a proxy or "marker" for indications of climate fluctuations and human influence on the region during the Holocene period, i.e. from about 12,000 years ago to the present day.
