21.08.2015| Stephan Sobolev, head of the “Geodynamic Modeling” Section, has accepted a call for W3 Professorship in Geodynamics as joint appointment of University Potsdam with GFZ. Stephan Sobolev has been working in GFZ since 1997 and since 2007 as a head of the Section. In Potsdam University Prof Sobolev is teaching a course of “Advanced Geodynamics”.

Prof Stephan Sobolev is one of internationally recognized leaders in the research field of modelling of geological processes. The key feature of his scientific approach is a broad multidisciplinary view combining geophysics, geochemistry and geodynamics, powered by advanced physical and mathematical modelling techniques. His scientific interests include modelling of multi-scale deformation processes at plate boundaries from earthquakes and associated tsunamis to mountain-building, subduction and continental break-up, as well as modelling of mantle convection, mantle plumes and large igneous provinces. From his work focused at fundamental science, he also derives practical applications like a new concept for tsunami early warning system based on real time GPS measurements, the so called “GPS Shield” concept.
