The Helmholtz Centre Potsdam - GFZ German Research Centre for Geosciences is the national centre for research into the geosphere. With around 1,650 employees, we develop a sound understanding of systems and processes of the solid Earth as well as strategies and options for action to counter global change, understand natural hazards and sustainably secure energy and raw material requirements.

For section 1.4 Remote Sensing and Geoinformatics (department “Geodesy”), we are looking for a:

Researcher in Forest Terrestrial Laser Scanning (f_m_x)

We are looking for a motivated researcher who can lead field campaigns, primarily for the acquisition of Terrestrial Laser Scanning (TLS) data in forests. This includes planning and execution, but also documentation of acquired data, post-processing and archiving. 

Your research will contribute to a range of projects like GEOTREES and FORWARDS that make use of recent developments in laser scanning technology in order to estimate forest aboveground carbon. Our section strives to establish remote sensing as a core method for Earth Sciences and geo- and nature-based solutions. You will be able to draw from the broad expertise and projects within the section, enhance collaboration and contribute to an innovative environment for a diverse group of people and ideas. Your responsibilities:

  • Planning, scheduling and executing TLS campaigns in diverse forest ecosystems from the tropical Amazon to Scandinavian forests
  • Documentation of field data acquisition
  • Post-processing and archiving

Your qualifications:

  • M.Sc. in remote sensing or environmental sciences (or close to completion)
  • Fieldwork experience in temperate and tropical forests
  • Experience with TLS of the manufacturer RIEGL (specifically model VZ400i)
  • English is required, Spanish language skills are beneficial

Start date: As soon as possible
Fixed-term: 6 months
Salary: The position is classed as salary group 13 according to “TVöD Bund (Tarifgebiet Ost)”. The salary group is determined on the basis of the Collective Wage Agreement and the respective personal qualifications.
Working hours: Full-time (currently 39 h/week); The position is generally suitable for part-time work.
Place of work: Potsdam
