Wissenschaftliche Interessen:

I am an analytical geochemist, driven by understanding the element distribution and cycling in Earth's history and the processes shaping its resources. My research utilizes geochemical techniques to reveal the secrets hidden within rocks and aqueous reservoirs. There are many ways to unveil Earths past and present secrets, e.g., by looking at the element and isotope distribution within the rock record. Some of them can be used to reconstruct past paleo-conditions, others to comprehend the processes that occurred over time.

While my interest initially sparked in the Precambrian-Cambrian boundary, a pivotal period in Earth's history, I now find myself equally intrigued by how these and other past events continue to influence present-day systems. The Precambrian-Cambrian boundary is a textbook example of how strongly the geo-, bio, hydro and atmosphere are linked to each other. The famous Cambrian Explosion, despite ever progressing evolution, would not have been as spectacular if the continents did not just happen to re-order creating nice and shallow oceans, the fauna decided that swimming and hunting were nice hobbies, or increased and effective (continental) weathering carried all those delicious nutrients to the oceans. Therefore, I strongly support holistic approaches and looking at other research areas.

As the lab manager of the geochemistry labs I have the fortune to gain insights in various ongoing research topics. The geochemistry labs are part of the ElMiE-labs (Elements and Minerals of the Earth) and are responsible for the element part. My analytical expertise lies in applying various geochemical techniques to analyse the bulk elemental composition of rocks, fluids, and minerals; e.g., to determine

  • Diagenetic influence on isotope and element proxies
  • Geochemistry of sedimentary seawater archives
  • Fluid-rock interactions
  • Characterization of geologic reservoirs
