Zielstellung des Projektes ist, die Analyse von Störungszonen in der Taupo Volcanic Zone (TVZ) im Kontext der geothermischen Erkundung zu verbessern. Die Durchführung basiert auf einem Memorandum of Understanding zwischen dem GFZ and GNS Science, welches im September 2015 unterzeichnet wurde. 

In the frame of field tests, existing technologies will be compared and improved for their applicability in exploration of geothermal systems. New Zealand’s TVZ, with its high-enthalpy geothermal systems, is an ideal study region for further improvement and adaptation of these approaches. Geothermal energy contributes ca. 17% of New Zealand’s electricity generation, and is a key strategic national asset. This collaborative project will contribute to better understanding of these resources and elsewhere.
